Dialkyl pentasulfide, as a highly effective extreme-pressure and anti-wear additive, plays an irreplaceable role in metalworking and industrial lubrication. Its core mechanism of action stems from the active sulfur chains in its molecular structure: under high-temperature and high-pressure friction conditions, sulfur rapidly reacts chemically with metal surfaces to form a dense, robust iron sulfide protective film. This film exhibits low shear strength, effectively preventing direct contact and cold welding between microscopic asperities on metal surfaces, thereby significantly reducing the coefficient of friction and averting scuffing and excessive wear. It is precisely because of this property that dialkyl pentasulfide is extensively used in applications with the most stringent lubrication requirements.
(1) In the field of metal processing
Dialkyl pentasulfides are critical additives for formulating high-performance cutting fluids, drawing oils, and forming oils. Particularly in heavy-duty machining operations such as deep-hole drilling, broaching, tapping, and gear machining of high-hardness materials, the addition of this additive significantly mitigates the severe friction between the tool and workpiece, thereby extending tool life by several times and substantially improving the surface finish of the machined parts. Moreover, it is an ideal choice for environmentally friendly chlorine-free extreme-pressure formulations, capable of replacing conventional chlorinated paraffins and thus avoiding the potential environmental and health hazards posed by chlorine-containing residues after machining. In plastic-forming processes for ferrous metals, such as stamping and drawing, dialkyl pentasulfides also prevent adhesion between the workpiece and the die, reduce scrap rates, and enhance production efficiency.
(2) Among various types of lubricating greases
In addition to liquid lubricating oils, dialkyl pentasulfides are also commonly incorporated into various greases for the lubrication of heavy-duty bearings, couplings, and mining equipment. In these applications, the grease must not only exhibit excellent extreme-pressure performance as a base oil but also maintain stable chemical activity under prolonged static conditions or impact loads. Greases formulated with dialkyl pentasulfides can continuously provide a sulfidic protective layer on metal contact surfaces, thereby significantly extending the equipment’s maintenance intervals.
It should be noted that, due to its highly reactive sulfur content, dialkyl pentasulfide can cause chemical corrosion of copper and copper alloys, forming a brittle black film of copper sulfide or cuprous sulfide. Therefore, when machining or lubricating equipment with copper components—such as copper retainers in certain gears and electrical connectors—careful selection and appropriate use of a copper passivator are essential. In addition, this additive is supplied in a light-colored, low-odor liquid form, making it easier to handle and blend compared with conventional sulfur-based additives.
In summary, dialkyl pentasulfides, owing to their outstanding extreme-pressure chemical activity, have become indispensable functional additives in modern metalworking fluids, industrial gear oils, anti-wear hydraulic oils, and specialty lubricating greases, thereby providing reliable lubrication performance for a wide range of industrial applications characterized by heavy loads, high speeds, elevated temperatures, and stringent environmental requirements.
