I. Foundational Infrastructure Prerequisites
Molecular structure: , containing polysulfide chains (long S–S bonds) with low bond energy and easy to break;
It contains highly active sulfur, which is the core source of extreme-pressure performance; it remains stable at room temperature and becomes activated at high temperatures.
II. Anti-Wear Performance (Medium to Light Loads, Normal Temperatures)
- The polar end of the molecule adsorbs onto the metal friction surface, forming a physically and chemically adsorbed lubricating film.
- The oil film fills the microscopic asperities on the metal surfaces, thereby preventing direct contact between the friction pairs.
- Reduces the coefficient of friction, minimizes mild wear, and delivers conventional anti-wear performance.
III. Extreme-Pressure Action (Core Principle for Heavy Loads, High Temperatures, and Impact Loads)
High-temperature bond cleavage activation
The instantaneous high temperature and high pressure in the frictional contact zone cause the rupture of the unstable S–S bonds in polysulfide chains, releasing active elemental sulfur or sulfur radicals.
Chemical reaction with metal surfaces
Active sulfur undergoes a solid-phase reaction with the steel substrate (Fe), forming a composite iron sulfide reaction film on the metal surface.
- Iron sulfide films exhibit a high melting point, low shear strength, and good ductility;
- High-temperature resistance, high-pressure resistance, and anti-seizure performance; capable of withstanding heavy-load compression and impact.
- Completely eliminates direct dry metal-to-metal friction, thereby preventing galling, scuffing, welding, and seizing.
IV. Key Supporting Advantages
- Polysulfide-based sulfur exhibits a high sulfur content, enabling rapid formation of a dense reaction film with strong extreme-pressure load-carrying capability.
- It exhibits excellent solubility in mineral and synthetic oils, ensures uniform distribution, and provides continuous film replenishment in friction zones.
- Compared with low-sulfur sulfides, it exhibits significantly enhanced extreme-pressure and sintering performance, making it suitable for heavy-duty cutting oils and other lubricants.
